Newcastleton sprinter Libby Clegg won Paralympic gold in her 100m T11 category final.

In a close race, the British runner improved on the two silver medals she had already won in the 100m T12 category at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Paralympic Games.

She beat the other three runners in the final in a time of 11.96 seconds.

It brought to an end an eventful day for Clegg.

She had smashed the world record as she won her 100m T11 semi-final, earlier today.

The 26-year-old produced a lifetime best of 11.91 with her guide, Chris Clarke, to run under 12 seconds for the first time in her career.

But Clegg was then disqualified.

Guide Clarke was understood to have infringed the rules by pulling her in the middle of the race.

As a result, Clarke moved more than a stride length ahead of Clegg, which is against the rules.

The British team then launched an appeal, which was successful.

After all the drama, Clegg did, indeed, compete in tonight's final.

A Commonwealth champion in 2014 and a silver medallist at London 2012, Clegg was reclassified as a T11 athlete earlier this year.

Clegg is also due to compete in the 200m race in her new classification at the Paralympics.

The T11 category 200m heats and semi-final will take place on Monday, before the final a day later.
