Newcastle Falcons are offering a helping hand to a Carlisle school.

Newtown Community Primary School recently started a series of coaching and healthy lifestyle lessons with the club's Cumbria Community Development Officer Keith Robinson.

Ahead of the first sessions, which took place on January 12 and January 13, discussions were due to take place to see how the sessions will be ran, going forward.

Headteacher of Newtown Primary School Raymond Gordon said: "Greggs Foundation have been offering sponsorship out. They have put together a package with the Falcons.

"All the children in key stage two are going to take part, which will be great."

These are believed to be the first sessions run at the school in partnership with the Falcons.

The sessions will also present many of the students with the opportunity to see what they think of rugby.

"It's good in various ways. It promotes sport, so that the students get to take part in extracurricular activities but healthy eating is added in, which is very important," Mr Gordon added.

"It gives the students the opportunity to take part in rugby and see what they think of it. It gives them the opportunity to try something new."

The Greggs Foundation Breakfast Club programme also aims to provide educational benefits by increasing the number of breakfast clubs within schools.

Falcons' Robinson himself is an ex-Penrith, Kendal and Cumbria forward with plenty of rugby experience.
