Former world super-featherweight boxing champion Charles Shepherd will be involved with an event with Sugar Ray Leonard tonight.

The event, organised by MJK Sports Events LTD, will take place at the Bradford Hotel and will take place from around 6-11pm.

Carlisle’s Shepherd, who defeated American Tom “Boom Boom” Johnson in 1999 to capture the IBO World championship in one of the biggest nights of boxing Cumbria has witnessed, will provide his own insight into the life of a boxer.

Doors will open at 6pm for the night, with guests given an opportunity to have their picture taken with Sugar Ray from approximately 7pm.

Just after 8pm, Sugar Ray will be interviewed by Mark Peters and there will also be a Q & A with the Olympic gold medallist.

Meanwhile, in the middle of the live interview, Shepherd will give his own perspective on life inside and outside of the ring.

Shepherd said: "The night will mainly be about Sugar Ray but I'll be talking a bit, as well. I'm really looking forward to it."

Sugar Ray is regarded as one of the greatest fighters to ever write their name into the boxing history books.

He won an Olympic gold medal in the 1976 Montreal Games in the Light welterweight division, having won the Pan American Games in Mexico City a year earlier.

The 60-year-old then won the WBC world welterweight title with a 15th-round knockout of Puerto Rican Wilfred Benitez.

Sugar Ray then went on to win belts in multiple weight classes.

He became best known for his high-profile bouts with Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns, and the fights are remembered by some as the greatest era of Championship Boxing.

VIP tickets are £40 and other tickets are available for £20 for the event.

Shepherd runs Four Belt Fitness on Raffles Avenue in Carlisle.

Tickets are available on the MJK Sports Events website.
