Keswick Ladies second-team faced their second hockey match of the season against Kirkby Lonsdale and the final 1-1 score reflected the efforts of both teams.

From the start, both teams showed clear determination and drive for goal, despite it being their first match after the Christmas break.

The first few minutes of the game were dominated by Keswick through good possession and Grace Law’s attacking skills as she penetrated the opposition’s defence alongside Anna McSweeney.

However, Kirkby Lonsdale held firm and in turn tested Keswick’s defence, where Ellie Mason and Ella Lister worked tirelessly to prevent the opposition from having any shots on goal.

Midfielders Jodie Cowperthwaite and Jenny Hunter came into the game for Keswick, distributing well but the first half was a constant switch in possession, which produced no goals.

Not long into the second half, Keswick were awarded a short corner.

This was well used by midfielder Ali Lister, who scored the first goal by hitting the ball hard following a rebound from Kirkby’s goalie.

Shortly afterwards, Kirkby were awarded a penalty flick and they were able to draw level.

Kirkby continued to attack but couldn’t get past goalkeeper Heather Thomas, who produced a string of excellent saves.

In the closing stages, Keswick had the chance to win the game.

A through ball found Law (just coming back on after an injury) and she raced through to set-up a one-on-one with the Kirkby goalkeeper.

She got in a well-struck shot but, unfortunately for Keswick, the ball hit the bar and was cleared to end a tense, exciting contest.

Players of the Match for Keswick were Mason and Kate Whitmarsh.
