The Thursday Carliol League champions for 2017 are Courtfield who secured the title with an impressive 9-1 win over Dalston at The Recreation Ground.

Dalston could have won the league with an 8-2 win but, on the night, Courtfield proved too strong.

The Courtfield green has improved in the last few weeks but it was also good to see the Dalston green in very good condition, despite the large amounts of rain in the past week or so.

The surface has always been good but it was firmer and quicker than in recent years and was certainly as good as it has been for quite some time.

Despite the home teams reversal, the after-match hospitality was also good. Well done Dalston.

Subscription secured second place by beating West End 8-2 while Dalston slipped to third and Brampton finished the season weakly to drop to fourth place. Wetheral, Stanwix, West End and Holme Head followed in that order.

Friday Carliol League champions are Subscription who, as expected, scored a maximum victory over Holme Head at Myddleton Street last Friday.

The game was in doubt following heavy rain just after lunch but went ahead. Rick Gallagher was reported to have been walking on water when he won four club finals on one day last week and, as the photo shows, he was literally walking on water to enable last Friday’s match to be played.

Brampton retained second spot after winning 6-4 at Wetheral who finished fourth, and Courtfield moved into third place after beating West End by winning 10-0 at River Street. Dalston, West End, Stanwix and Holme Head followed in that order.

It was a tight finish to the Thursday Handicap League with three teams finishing on 20 points.

Brampton will no doubt be kicking themselves after losing by 31 shots at Stanwix when a draw would have been good enough to win the league.

Courtfield won their game at Dalston but, as expected, Subscription were too strong for West End and they leapt to top spot on their superior shot difference, with Courtfield in second and Brampton in third. Dalston finished in fourth place and Wetheral, Stanwix, Holme Head and West End finished in that order.

Like Thursday, the Friday Handicap League was very tight but victory went to Brampton who finished on 19 points, two ahead of Subscription and West End.

Brampton had a hard tussle at Wetheral but won 64-55 to get the necessary two points.

Subscription did as much as they could when winning 68-48 against Holme Head and Courtfield ended West End hopes by winning 78-51.

The league could have ended quite differently for in their penultimate game Subscription played Brampton and, with one rink left on the green, Subscription held a three-shot lead.

Brampton struck back with three shots to earn a point for the draw. Had they not gained that point, Brampton and Subscription would have finished with 18 points and Subscription would have taken the title with a better shot difference.
