Celebration tickets have been made available for the London 2017 World Para Athletics Championships following the success of ParalympicsGB athletes, including Libby Clegg, in Rio this summer.

London 2017 announced this week the creation of two special edition World Para Athletics Championships tickets in honour of British athletes’ performances at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The new tickets have been launched after the success of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s track and field athletes, with a 33-strong medal haul, which beat their 29 medal count from London 2012.

Fans can secure children’s tickets for just £3 and adults tickets for £9, in recognition of the nine world records set by British athletes at the Paralympic Games.

These tickets will be located in the lower bowl of the London Stadium.

Sprinter Clegg, from Newcastleton, is expected to be among the athletes competing at the World Para Athletics Championships in London next summer.

She won two golds in Brazil alongside her guide Chris Clarke.

The 26-year-old won the 100m and 200m double in the Paralympics in the T11 category.

She won the 200 metres in a Paralympic record time of 24.51 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Newcastleton sprinter claimed her first Paralympic gold, following silvers in London and Beijing, in the 100 metres.

She beat the other three runners in the final in a time of 11.96 seconds after breaking the world record in the semi-final.

Clegg had earlier this year been reclassified as a T11 athlete.

“I massively surprised myself,” Clegg said.

“It’s been a very tough year.

“If you asked me nine months ago whether this was going to happen, I would have told you it was not possible.”

Simon Lawson, from Maryport, was also involved in the Games in Brazil.

He competed on the final day in the T54 marathon alongside teammate and friend David Weir.

Lawson, who works as a mechanic at his parents’ motorcycle shop in London Road, Carlisle, finished in 14th position last Sunday.

He had been expecting a tactical race but, after an agonising wait on the start line, Marcel Hug and Kurt Fearnley set the early pace - and never looked back, winning gold and silver respectively.

Lawson finished in a time of one hour and 32 minutes.

The 34-year-old was the only Cumbrian involved in the Paralympics and this week thanked his fans for their support.

He said: “A massive thank you to all my friends and family and everyone for such amazing support over the past few months up to the Games and while out here.

“Every single, like, comment, message, card, donation has been such a massive help.

“Thank you to ParalympicsGB and the whole team of staff.”

These special celebration tickets for the World Para Athletics Championships will be on offer until Friday, September 30 and are sold on a first come, first serve basis.

The Championship will take place from Friday, July 14 to Sunday, July 23.

Other Paralympic heroes, such as Richard Whitehead, Paul Blake, Hannah Cockroft, Jonnie Peacock and Georgie Hermitage are also expected to compete in the Para Athletics Championships in London next summer.

Meanwhile, the World Championships, which could include the likes of Mo Farah, Usain Bolt and Katarina Johnson-Thompson, will take place from Friday, August 4 to Sunday, August 13.
