Carlisle boxer Decca Heggie was celebrating last weekend after winning the coveted Guvnor title in London.

Fighting at Clapham Grand, Heggie came up against Julius Francis on Sunday.

Francis's biggest fight of his career to date came in 2000 when he faced American heavyweight Mike Tyson.

The likes of Audley Harrison, Vitali Klitschko and another Ukranian in Alexander Dimitrenko are among Francis's other opponents.

So, the Londoner certainly seemed to have more boxing pedigree than the Cumbrian.

But Heggie began the fight the quicker of the two boxers as he attempted to land an early blow.

Francis attempted to respond but struggled to do so during a positive opening round for the Cumbrian.

Heggie was again on the front foot at the start of the second round.

But Francis from Peckham did manage to deliver a right hook to the face of Heggie before the close of the round.

Interestingly, at the end of each round, while Heggie sat down as he received instructions from his coach, Francis opted to remain on his feet in his corner of the ring.

Francis delivered a left hook to the side of Heggie's head at the start of the third round.

But Heggie remained in a good rhythm throughout the fight.

A nervy wait ensued at the end of the fight, before it was announced Heggie was the new Guvnor.

Speaking on Youtube immediately after the fight, Heggie said: "First of all, I would like to dedicate this win to Lenny McLean.

"He has been my idol ever since I was a 12-year-old boy.

"I always used to say to my dad when I was a kid, I always wanted to be the Guvnor.

"That dream has come true tonight.

"I've been so humbled by the support I got tonight at the Clapham Grand from all you Southerners."

Heggie was originally born and bred in Harraby.

He is also being cast alongside Michael Gambon in an upcoming film.

The 32-year-old will feature as Blockie Johnson in My Name is Lenny, a biopic of notorious London hard-man, actor and criminal, Lenny ‘The Guv’nor’ McLean - who Heggie dedicated his weekend win to.

His role in the film all came about while Heggie was involved in a documentary about McLean.

“His son approached me at one of my fights about appearing in the movie," he said.

"He said I had an aura – little old me from Carlisle!”

The film, due for a 2017 release, will also star X-Men and Mad Max actor, Josh Helman in addition to Gambon – TV and movie veteran and Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films.

Heggie, who struggled with cocaine addiction throughout his twenties, has also suffered from depression and struggled with mental illness.
