Carlisle Racecourse's increasing profile has been given a further boost by the announcement of a £241,000 increase in prize money for 2017.

That is their share of a £2.1 million hike across the Jockey Club's 15 UK courses.

The importance of the increased funding for Carlisle is that it will attract better horses and, with that, the highest-profile trainers and jockeys, and bigger attendances.

Carlisle has been chosen to stage the Finals Day of the Northern Lights Jumps Series, featuring five £25,000 races as part of a card worth more than £150,000.

Geraldine McKay, Carlisle Racecourse's general manager, said: "We were absolutely determined to secure the Northern Lights Finals here for Carlisle given the ongoing support this series offers for racing in the north.

"Our ambition here is to strengthen our programme to serve the north better.

"We are delighted to be hosting these Finals and look forward to following the series this year."

Trainer Brian Ellison, a regular visitor to Carlisle from his Yorkshire base, said: "The fact that smaller courses will benefit - and courses in the north such as Carlisle - is a big step forward for the sport."
