Carlisle Hockey Club’s Ladies have been crowned Cumbria Cup champions.

Playing in the competition this month as they began their 2017/18 season, Carlisle beat Kendal’s first-team in the final to seal their victory.

Things got off to a slow start for the Cumbrians as they lost 1-0 against Kendal before successive 1-1 draws against Keswick and Dalston. Lauren Harden scoring both the goals in those stalemates.

But Carlisle’s results continued to improve after their loss in their opening game, beating Ambleside 3-0 in their penultimate group-stage clash. Ellen Pinguey, Jess Wharton and Lucy Brown the scorers.

Carlisle then booked their place in the semi-final when they won 4-0 against Kirkby Stephen. Brown (2) again found the net, as did Hannah Wharton – Jess’ sister – and Kirsty Norwood.

In the semi-final, Carlisle’s Ladies faced Windermere and booked their place in the final after a 2-1 success. Hannah Lilburn and Pinguey getting the all-important goals.

Up against Kendal in the final, Carlisle scored early and then held on to their lead, mainly thanks to some superb saves from young goalkeeper Heather Thomas and resolute defending from the likes of Rachael Smith.

Carlisle’s squad was made up of Lucy Brown, Nicky Spry, Sarah White, Heather Thomas, Kirsty Norwood, Hannah Lilburn, Ellen Pinguey, Rachael Smith, Kyra Walton, Lauren Harden, Hannah Wharton, Jess Wharton and Jenni Wharton.

Their Ladies’ 1st XI will be playing in North West Division Two (North West) after promotion from the Cumbria League last season.
