Border City Wheelers youth rider Adam Bent became a national champion last weekend.

Adam finished on top of the pile in the British Cycling Under-14 Cyclocross National Championship at Peel Park, Bradford on Saturday.

In a large field of over 60 riders from across the country, he took the win ahead of Finlay Pickering of Hull Thursday RC and Joe Keily of Welwyn Wheelers RC.

After a steady start and fall on one of the many slippy corners, Adam fought his way to the head of the race and made his winning move with a lap to go, gaining a margin of 30 seconds by the finish.

His sister Olivia, also competing in Border City Wheelers colours, had a great race too, finishing in the top 10 of her category. She finished in ninth in the Under-16 girls category.

A full weekend of racing was held over two days covering all age categories, culminating in the Elite Men and Women’s Races, won by defending champions Ian Field and Nikki Brammeier.

In typically muddy conditions for this venue, the riders completed laps over a set time of up to one hour for the senior events.

Tight corners, off camber sections, steep climbs and descents make this a great spectator sport, with several sections requiring the riders to dismount and run with the bike.

The cyclocross season runs from September to February, and while very popular on the Continent, its profile in the UK has increased significantly in the past few seasons.
