Keswick Men's 1st hockey team scored a deserved 3-1 home win over Didsbury after being pegged back early in the second half.

From the first minute, they showed their resolve, chasing and challenging every ball and their efforts didn't take long to bear fruit.

Ben Harrison scored the opening goal after just nine minutes to set-up almost constant Keswick pressure with jinking runs from Rob Cook, Thomas Morgan and Luke Heap providing good opportunities for themselves and team-mates Rikki Barnes and Clive Swanston.

There were no more goals before half time, due in no small part to the visitors’ goalkeeper, who was a solid last line of defence.

In the second half, it was surprisingly Didsbury who scored first after nine minutes following a rare trip into Keswick's D.

However it was a minor hiccup and, after 18 minutes, Swanston slotted home from the edge of the D to regain the lead.

Keswick kept building pressure and Didsbury cracked again after 22 minutes of the second half with a goal from Charlie Jackson.

The Lakesiders had several more chances but were unable to capitalise, and the match finished 3-1.

Earlier, the Keswick Ladies 2nd team had a really tough game against the league leaders Carlisle, who had beaten the Ladies 1st's a couple of weeks earlier.

The Carlisle team pressed hard from the off and only some determined defence from Ellie Mason, Ella Lister, Claire Scourgal and Heather Thomas in goal prevented Carlisle from scoring more than the six they netted by half-time.

However Keswick didn't only defend, they dug deep and some good midfield play from Jodie Cowperthwaite, Andrea Kellett, Fiona Chapman and Emma Symonds led to some great through-balls for the forwards Grace Law, Anna McSweeney and Becky Semple to launch their counter attacks.

It was one of these runs from Anna McSweeney that allowed her to get Keswick on the scoreboard, going past the keeper to slot home.

In the second half, Keswick came out in a determined mood and put in some solid work in defence.

They kept-out Carlisle several times but the city side continued to press and eventually scored another six goals to record a 12-1 victory.

The young Keswick team should hold their heads high as they were playing an older and more experienced team, but never let their heads drop and continued to run for each other until the final whistle.
