Win at Workington is vital for league charge says Whitehaven's ex-Town ace

Aussie star Andrew Beattie says Whitehaven must win at Workington on Good Friday to claw back the points they surrendered at Rochdale.

Beattie, who spent four years at Workington before joining Haven in the close season, says the league points are vital but it will be no easy ride.

“That game against Rochdale dropped us a little bit back out of contention to get into the top four,” admitted Beattie, who is finding form at loose-forward with Haven. "I think we are about four points away from catching up with the next team above us now.

“So we really need to win this game to keep in touch with the sides above us.

“But Workington will want to win to keep them up in the top two or three so both sides have everything to play for.”

Beattie admitted Workington were the better side in the clubs’ previous two meetings this year, in the Ike Southward Memorial and the Northern Rail Cup.

But he believes this Championship One game will be very close to call.

“The Workington team that played us the first two times was a good team who played well together and they deserved to win both,” declared Beattie.

“But we have changed a little bit since then, some players have come back and some have found form so I honestly think it will be a very close game.

“We have done really well this year, the worst part was having to start on minus nine points and we had to get back to positive points as quick as possible.

“Then it wasn’t great to lose at Rochdale but I think a lot of teams are going to drop a few points here and there in this league.”
