Whitehaven star's warning over title-chasing Doncaster
Last updated at 11:35, Saturday, 04 August 2012
Martyn Wilson has warned that Doncaster have 50,000 reasons to dig deep against Whitehaven at the Recre tomorrow (3pm).
The dangerous Dons lie second in Championship One, two points behind Barrow with four games to play, and they are eyeing the bumper cash prize awaiting the champions. And Wilson, named at second-row for Haven, believes Doncaster will be ready for action.
“I think they are staying up here overnight before the game and are taking it seriously,” said Wilson. “They think they are getting a hard game, and they are. We need to be switched on as they are going for the 50 grand.”
Wilson featured on the wing in Haven’s 48-16 defeat at the Keepmoat in March and is named in the second-row for a second successive match after impressing in last week’s fine win at Rochdale, where they turned a 12-all half-time scoreline in to a 31-12 rout.
“Our defence was absolutley brilliant in the second-half,” he added. “It was just about the best second-half we have played all year. You could tell what the game meant to a lot of people, and the fans were brilliant.
“I really enjoyed it. I’m happy to be getting a game, to be honest, and I don’t mind where I play.
“I’m a bit versatile that way. If someone gets injured I can more or less slot in to anywhere – maybe not half-back.”
Wilson is named in an unchanged side by coach Don Gailer.
“He has worked hard and waited for his chance,” Gailer said.
“He went through a long period when he couldn’t get a game, but others quit or walked away and he has made the most of his opportunity.
“They’ve trained well this week and we are going with the same 17.
“They gave it a good shot last week and deserve to go around again.
“You are on a hiding to nothing if you change it.”
Doncaster have signed giant back-rower Lucas Walshaw, from Super League Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, on dual-registration, and he will come in to contention tomorrow.
“Wakefield, who have been very good to us this season, rate him highly and he is on the fringe of their first team squad,” said coach Tony Miller.
“He’s been playing for their Under-20s but they want to see him playing at a higher level to gain experience and they’ve allowed him to come here for the season.”
Haven: Palfrey, Calvert, Wiper, Parker, Hamzat, Rooney, Rudd, Houghton, Hemingway, Cullnean, Varkulis, Wilson, Doran. Subs: Sice, Fox, Beattie, Haggerty.
