Whitehaven coach looking for big response from Sam Gee

Don Gailer predicted a big response from Sam Gee after the hooker was left out of Whitehaven’s win over South Wales Scorpions on Sunday.

Gee has enjoyed an encouraging debut season at the Recre but had a poor game in Haven’s defeat against Barrow last week, and he was 18th man at the weekend, scrum-half Ben Karalius filling in for Carl Sice at No 9, off the bench.

“Sam had a pretty unhappy match against Barrow and he knows that,” said the coach, who was quick to point out that everyone makes mistakes.

“Knowing his determination and character, he’ll work extremely hard to get back in, quickly.”

Haven’s new on-loan prop Anthony Mullally is set to make his Ireland debut against England Knights at St Helens on Saturday.

Mullally, one of seven uncapped players in the 19-strong squad, has joined Haven from Super League Widnes Vikings for the rest of the season and made a fine start against South Wales.

He is one of three Vikings in the Ireland squad. Featherstone half-back Liam Finn will captain the side for the fourth time in a match that will be played as a curtain-raiser to England’s game against the Exiles. Mark Aston’s squad includes six home-grown players and five Super League regulars.
