The squad, including Haven prop Soni Radovanovic, will spend five days in the area before flying to Ireland for their Euro opener next weekend.

And at the Recre on Tuesday night, from 6.30pm, fans can meet the international squad.

“It’s unique to have a touring party preparing for such a tournament in west Cumbria,” said Gary Hewer, Haven’s head of performance, who is filling the same role with the Serbs.

“West Cumbrians, whether they are fans of Whitehaven, Workington, Warrington or Wigan, can come along and meet international players on their own doorstep.

“For the Serbian board to choose our area as a base is prestigious. They are a development nation, and it’s quite a privilege for us in west Cumbria to have them on our doorstep.”

After Sunday’s clash with Ireland, the Serbia squad will fly to Belgrade to prepare for the following weekend’s visit of Wales.

Ireland’s 20-man squad includes five players from the country’s domestic competition but also the likes of Super League stars Scott Grix, of Wakefield, Castleford’s Ryan Boyle and Wigan pair Pat Richards and Mike McIlorum, plus a string of Championship players.
