Five-strong shortlist as Haven close in on coach

WHITEHAVEN directors will choose the club’s new head coach from a shortlist of five.
They hope to have the new boss in post as soon as possible, to start signing fresh talent and deciding which of the current playing staff should be retained for the Championship campaign next year.
But chief executive Barry Richardson pledged the board would approach the process with an open mind.
“I guarantee we haven’t had any one particular person in mind,” he said.
“We have some good candidates on the shortlist and are now looking forward to the interview process.”
Interviews are expected to start this week.
Fourteen coaches applied for the post, with former Castleford, Gateshead and York boss Dave Woods thought to be one of them.
Long-time Recre coach Dave Smith has led the team to two impressive wins, following Don Gailer’s departure, and is enjoying the temporary role, alongside Mark Ryan and Les Ashe.
“I’ve been down here nearly 10 years and have relished the opportunity to step up, albeit on a temporary basis,” said Smith, who believes Haven have the potential to go all the way in the Championship One play-offs.
