Whitehaven are to form a dynamic new working relationship with world club champions Leeds Rhinos which could see young Super League prospects on loan at the Recre.
It’s the first time Haven have entered in to such a relationship with a top-flight club, and it could also mean that promising Haven youngsters are given a chance to shine at Headingley.
In addition, the Rhinos are to send a team to play Haven in a pre-season friendly in the next New Year, while local coaching clinics with Leeds coaches are also anticipated.Haven’s coaching team will be welcome to visit the Rhinos and study training methods.
“For us to be associated with, and to have that relationship with Leeds, is a great boost for Whitehaven, and something we’ll look to build upon,” said director Barry Richardson, who paid tribute to well-connected Haven fan Billy Rudd and chairman Gordon Grace, who negotiated the agreement with Leeds.
“Leeds will obviously keep tabs on our players, and if they have players available, we could take them on loan.”
Leeds will also have first option on any top level prospects produced by Haven who are looking to move on.
Haven’s promising scrum-half Gregg McNally is one starlet who has already spent time training with the Rhinos, and he has been invited back for a month’s trial.
Though the 17-year-old cannot travel at present as he is preparing for school exams.
n Haven’s AGM will be held on Wednesday, April 30, when the club’s current caretaker board will be up for election.
