Super sub Stuart snatches late win

WHITEHAVEN Amateurs scored three minutes from time to earn a 1-0 win at Brandon United – and stay top of Northern League Division Two.
Substitute Stuart Shaw, who had only entered the fray on 80 minutes stole in at the far post to head in a cross from fellow sub Kevin Connolly.
Manager John George said: “It was a good goal. He showed the desire to get in there ahead of the home defender and win the ball in the air.
“He’s only 19 but he seems as though he’s going to be that type of player who can get up and score from midfield. That’s exactly why we sent him on.”
It had been a very even game – always looking as though it would be settled by an only goal.
“It was end to end and to be honest defences were on top for most of the game. There were few clear-cut chances.
“I thought Brandon were the best footballing team we’ve played so far. They had some decent players and wanted to play properly.
“I think they were a bit embarrassed by how far they had finished bottom last season and they have made changes and brought in new players, to good effect it seems.”
Jack Fryer, now establish in Whitehaven’s goal as Craig Routledge looks as though he will need a hernia operation, made his best save early in the game.
He had to make a fine one-handed stop to turn a strong shot over the bar.
Graham Lilly and Kevin Law, at the heart of the Whitehaven defence, were very solid while Malcolm Holliday pulled the strings in the middle of the park.
“That was Kevin’s last game for a while. He’s got a three-match suspension and has been playing really well,” said George. “Wayne Collins, who has bags of Wearside League experience will come in on Saturday when we entertain Thornaby.”
