The west Cumbrians clinched the North Lancs Cumbria Premier Division title last weekend with a six-wicket win over a Dalton side who arrived in west Cumbria with just eight men.

That added to the Higson Cup in the Valentine Ground trophy cabinet with room to add the County Cup if they can see off Kendal in next weekend’s final.

Workington, unbeaten so far in league and cup, will have to go into the final without professional Kaushalya Gajasinghe who has returned home to Sri Lanka – but with a contract to return next year.

In that title-clinching win over Dalton, Gajasinghe scored 35 to take him past 1,000 runs for the season while taking 3-16 from just seven overs.

Before they get to grips with Northern League side Kendal in the Cup final, Workington have two contrasting League games to play – at home to bottom side Whitehaven tomorrow and a trip to runners-up Furness next Saturday.

The aim will be looking to win both and go into that Cup final still unbeaten against a Northern League side currently struggling next to bottom.

Whitehaven, in vivid contrast, have not won a League game all season losing 18 of their 19 fixtures so far. They will be looking positively towards regrouping, recharging the batteries in Division One and coming back stronger for it.

Wigton and Keswick are having their personal battle to see who will finish fifth. Keswick currently have a three-point lead and the two sides meet tomorrow at Lowmoor Road.

Cleator, who slipped to a surprise home defeat by Wigton last week, visit Cockermouth who went down by only six runs at Furness.

The big game in Division One is at Lindal where Carlisle are the visitors. It’s a virtual shoot-out for the title with the city side currently leading the south Cumbrians by five points.

If Carlisle win they will return to the Premier Division as champions but if they lose it will go down to the last games. Carlisle visit Ulverston and Lindal are away to Workington 2nds.

Tomorrow Workington entertain the only club below them in the table, Kirkby, while Seascale are at home to Ulverston.
