Workington completed a remarkable season without a single defeat – and three trophies in the Valentine Ground cabinet.

Make that four if you add the second team’s victory in the final of the Sowerby Cup against Millom.

But for the all-conquering first team it’s been a remarkable effort, winning the North Lancs Cumbria Premier Division title with an unblemished record.

They also added the league’s main knockout competition, the Higson Cup and, on Sunday, rounded it off with a comfortable victory over Northern League Kendal in the final of the County Cup.

They had already beaten another Northern League side, Kendal’s neighbours Netherfield in the semi-final, so weren’t lacking in confidence.

They had also snatched a fine win at Furness with a ball to spare in their final league fixture the day before, against their nearest challengers and previous champions.

Workington skipper Callum Moffat won the toss and elected to bat, although initially, they found the Kendal slow bowlers difficult to handle.

Kristian Moffat led the way with 22 but it didn’t look good as they subsided to 65-5 in 24 overs.

The recovery was started by Greg Platten (43) who found a willing ally in Matt Gorley (48) and Workington eventually got to 161 all out.

When Kendal batted, they found Workington’s pace attack in irresistible form and, after 11 overs, the Northern League side had slumped to 30-6. The game was almost won.

They were eventually bowled out for 84 in 27.3 overs with Joseph Dodds top-scoring with 24.

Opening bowler Matt Lowden took 2-8 off his eight overs while Andy Ireland had 4-25 from his allotted eight.

Simon Beare (2-18) and Lewis Hull (2-13) shared the rest of the wickets as Workington claimed victory by an impressive 77 runs.
