Heavy thunder storms decimated Saturday’s programme with only four games reaching a conclusion.

However, there were still a number of outstanding performances.

In the Premier Division, Temple Sowerby came out on top in their local derby with Appleby thanks mainly to skipper Alister Craig.

Winning the toss, he asked Appleby to bat and, with four catches assisting James Farmer’s 5/16, the home side were bowled out for 130 with only Joe Davidson (36) and Jordan Palmer (28) offering much.

In reply, Sowerby were coasting with Craig dominating but his dismissal on 94 (6 x 6s and 11 x 4s) caused a sudden collapse as they lost five wickets scoring the dozen required on his departure.

Ryan Davidson (4/34) was the pick of the Appleby bowlers.

Stainton collected their first win of the season, defeating Scotby by 103 runs, Scott Lancaster (100 not out) scored a maiden century.

Scotby struggled in reply and were all out for 80. James Swann (49) offered the most resistance but succumbed to Lancaster as he and Martin Ruddick (2/10) mopped up the tail.

In Division One, Nunwick elected to bat against Staffield and lost both openers before a run had been scored.

Ross Collin (31) and Steve Cherry (15) staged a partial recovery but, when the rain, thunder and lightning arrived, they were 52/5.

After a two-hour delay, play resumed and the Nunwick innings concluded rapidly at 68. Staffield did not hang about with further rain threatening and raced to their target in 15 overs with Richard Bamber unbeaten on 34.

Credit goes to both teams for wanting to continue, especially Nunwick who could so easily have been less inclined considering their situation at the break.

Appleby conceded their game at Lanercost but are hopeful of an improving situation over the next few weeks.

Wetheral against Keswick was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

In Division Two, starts were made at Gamblesby and Edenhall but both games were abandoned part way through.

At Penrith, on the artificial wicket, Penrith 3rds defeated Wigton by six wickets Joe Stamper making an unbeaten 95.

Sunday’s programme was completed without any problems.

Braithwaite continued their early season form with another victory, beating Stainton by 84 runs. Dan Pyke (62) starring with the bat for a change. Jon Ridley took 4/52 as Braithwaite totalled 175/8.

Stainton never got close as Stew Marshall retired on 23 to allow Stainton youngsters to bat out the last overs. Lee Zaninetti (4/24) was the best of the bowlers.

Carlisle 3rds are having a good season and enjoyed an easy 108-run victory against Wigton 2nds. There was consistent batting throughout, Phil Wittred top-scoring with an unbeaten 45.

Callum Dodd (5/53) was the best of the bowlers. Wigton, in reply, were all out for 103.

Keswick 3rds took the major share of the points in a high scoring game at Edenside. An opening partnership of 151 between Karl Link (90) and Finn Turnbull (55) laid the foundation in Keswick’s 231/6.

Anthony Wilson (3/34) and Charlie Hutchinson (3/32) shared the wickets.

Hutchinson (57) then completed a fine all-round performance when Carlisle batted. Some solid batting but they ended up 36 short.

There were two cup ties of contrasting scores.

Staffield posted an impressive 195/1 with Steve Thomlinson (112) and Mark Vasey (63) putting together a partnership of 167.

Langholm made a spirited response with Andrew Bell (65) at the helm but a brilliant spell of bowling from Mark Vasey (5/36), including a hat-trick, ended their hopes.

A low-scoring game at Wigton had the visitors Penrith 4ths 60/9 with no-one (except extras) in double figures. Wigton (61/5) won by 5 wickets. James Ellis (4/7) outstanding for Penrith.
