More women’s and girls’ softball cricket festivals have been arranged in Cumbria.

The first set of softball festivals, organised by Cumbria Cricket, proved to be a big hit in the county.

And three further events will be held at Netherfield Cricket Club, Whitehaven Cricket Club and Ulverston Cricket Club.

Netherfield will host their event on August 25, Whitehaven will welcome women and girls for their softball cricket festival on Friday, September 8 and Ulverston will host their festival two days later.

The latest set of festivals come after six were held at clubs such as Carlisle, Egremont and Keswick last month with great success.

Laura Marshall, women’s and girls’ development officer for Cumbria Cricket, said: “We want to encourage everyone to come along and, if you haven’t played cricket before, that’s perfect as we are targeting new women to play cricket, and we want you and your friends to have a great first experience of the game.

“The fun and friendly games will be eight-a-side, using a soft ball. The rules are designed to make the games fun, fast and easy to pick up.

“Our goal is for everyone involved to have a fantastic experience. It’s more about the fun atmosphere on a festival theme with music playing, barbecue, different types of stalls and fun activities for the kids. Don’t miss out on a free fun day – we would love for you to be part of it.”

Director of women and girls’ cricket at Cumbria Cricket Penny Thompson said: “So many girls and women across the county are discovering cricket now, and they are showing us all how fun it can be in new and different formats.

“Women’s softball is a brilliant case of mixing up the rules to make the sport fit the players and I think we can all expect something very different from these festival days.”
