Former England cricket selector Geoff Miller is set to come to Carlisle this year.

Miller will get Carlisle Cricket Club’s 125th anniversary celebrations under way this year at a dinner.

Before he was elected a national selector in 2008, Miller played 34 Tests for England and 25 One-Day Internationals.

Miller has given Carlisle Cricket Club fans a flavour of what they can expect on the night.

“I remember my debut for Derbyshire against Lancashire at Buxton when it snowed," he told the Daily Telegraph .

“They got about 550 for three. You’d call them an ordinary side.

"They only had players like Barry Wood, David Lloyd, Harry Pilling, Clive Lloyd, Farokh Engineer, Jack Simmons, Peter Lever and Ken Shuttleworth.

“Us? Well, our opening bowlers didn’t like the beer at Buxton, so they weren’t playing. We had two young lads instead.

“But it’s the highest ground in the country, Buxton, so they both went off with high-altitude exhaustion, which left it to me, bowling non-spinning off-spinners and Philip Russell, who bowled little seamers just right for hitting – which Clive Lloyd frequently did to Buxton town centre."

The event will take place on March 25 at Shepherd’s Inn and will include a two-course meal. The night is due to start at 7pm.

Ian Milburn, of IM Events, organised the event, and said: “Jamie Sutherland is booked as the comedian for the night with Geoff Miller.

"A headline act on the comedy circuit, Jamie also is an MC in corporate hospitality at Everton FC.

“He has also supported some of the biggest names in comedy and has gained a reputation as one of the rising stars.”
