England have confirmed Cumbrian Ben Stokes is fit for today’s second One-Day International against South Africa.

Stokes, from Cockermouth, scored 25 at Headingley in England’s 72-run victory on Wednesday as they posted 339 for six.

Skipper Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales and Moeen Ali were among the runs for the Three Lions.

But the 25-year-old managed to bowl just two overs in the win due to pain in his left knee – the same knee which needed surgery last summer, ruling him out for almost two months, with Stokes’ only major contribution on the field seeing him take the catch which dismissed David Miller.

But the one-time Cockermouth Cricket Club player, now one of England’s most dangerous players, had scans on his injury on Thursday.

And a brief statement from the England Cricket Board said Stokes “is fit to play and is available to bowl” as England look to take an unassailable 2-0 series lead against the Proteas at the Ageas Bowl.

The decision now falls to captain Morgan, who struck a century in Wednesday’s victory, and coach Trevor Bayliss whether to play Cumbria’s Stokes, with the ICC Champions Trophy starting next Thursday.

With England set for a busy 2017, which will end with the Ashes in Australia, Stokes may not be risked.

Meanwhile, Stokes will return to west Cumbria this August to host a PCA Masters day at Cockermouth Cricket Club.

Stokes has recently returned from the Indian Premier League, where he was crowned the most valuable player at the competition. The explosive all-rounder is expected to be one of the key men during the Champions Trophy with England set to play Bangladesh in their tournament-opener.
