Cumbrian Ben Stokes will again be in Indian Premier League action today – looking for a third straight win.

Stokes’ Rising Pune Supergiant team beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets on Saturday for their second successive victory.

Australian opening batsman David Warner struck 43 from 40 balls and Moisés Henriques hit 55 not out from 28 balls, including eight boundaries, as the Sunrisers set the Supergiants a target of 177.

Stokes ended with disappointing figures of 0-19 from his two overs.

But one-time Cockermouth Cricket Club player and Cockermouth School pupil Stokes, alongside opener Rahul Tripathi and Indian superstar MS Dhoni, saw the Supergiants home as they secured victory off the final ball.

Today, the Supergiants will face Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, while all-rounder Stokes could come up against England team-mate Jos Buttler, who helped fire the Indians to a win over Delhi Daredevils on Saturday as he struck a quick-fire 28.

Dhoni had come under fire after a poor start to the 10th edition of the IPL but he top scored in Rising Pune Supergiant's chase.

But Stokes came out in defence of the former India captain, with the Cumbrian also having been impressed with his wicket keeping as well as his batting.

He said on the IPL website: “He’s got amazing hands. If your foot is out of the crease even by a millimetre, you’re gone.”

Back-to-back wins had seen the Supergiants move into the top four in the IPL table with six points from six games - before being overtaken by Kings XI Punjab - while Mumbai Indians top the pile with 12 points from their seven matches, having lost once.

Indians’ Nitish Rana currently sits as one of this year’s IPL top run scorers, while fast bowlers Mitchell McClenaghan and Jasprit Bumrah have impressed with the ball.

At the end of the group format, the top four sides will then move into a knockout stage next month.
