Carlisle Cricket Club were left to rue a series of missed opportunities after an unusually indisciplined fielding display let champions Workington off the hook.

Workington reached 227-6 from their 50 overs at the Ernest Valentine Ground on Saturday after being inserted by the visitors.

Off-spinner Ben Davidson returned figures of 4-69 from 14 overs, backed up by seamer Phil Frazer’s 2-39 from seven.

Yet it was a series of dropped catches that left a packed afternoon crowd astonished, as Robbie Lambert (41) and Andrew Ireland (50) made the visitors pay for their fielding errors on a green wicket.

In response, Carlisle were never up with the required rate as wickets tumbled.

Opener Ben Davidson batted through the innings making a dogged 65 not out with Jordan Whinn (21) and Henry Walker (20) the only other contributors as the visitors closed on 152-8.

The City side remain a clear third in the Premier League with a 12-point lead over nearest rivals Cleator, ahead of the visit of Furness next Saturday to Edenside.
