Comets braced for Dan return

DANIEL NERMARK will be back in Workington colours tomorrow night for the re-arranged clash with Glasgow Tigers.

The Comets No1, pictured, rode in a Swedish League match last night and scored 11 points before contacting team manager Ian Thomas to say he was ready to resume at Derwent Park. Thomas said: “Daniel has had a practice session and now a League match wearing the special knee braces he had made. Although they haven’t been particularly comfortable he is getting used to them and will be ready to face the Tigers.

“He is a week later than planned, but even so it is a remarkably quick return from an injury which we feared might keep him, out for the rest of the season.

“He has been told that at some point he will need an operation on the knee but I believe he’s hoping that won’t be necessary until his racing career is over.

“Getting Daniel back in the side is a terrific boost for the team. It is just the sort of lift we needed after last week’s first home defeat of the season against Berwick.

“What we have to concentrate on now is making sure we beat Glasgow, Stoke and Newcastle in our remaining three matches – all at Derwent Park – which would ensure our participation in the League play-offs.”

Nermark will also be on course to represent the Comets in the Premier League Riders Championship at Sheffield on September 21.

Home skipper Andre Compton is facing a race to be fit for the Championship at Owlerton because of injury.

Compton was involved in a horrifying high-speed crash during the Tigers' recent home defeat by Birmingham and was battered and bruised.

Should he make it for the showpiece Super 7even event he will start as one of the favourites and is a former winner of the prestigious title. He beat Workington’s Simon Stead in a famous and controversial final a few years ago.

Sheffield chief Neil Machin said: "We'll have to play it by ear with Andre but from a club point of view we would love to see him representing us."
