Workington Reds go in search of some compensation tonight for Saturday’s heartbreak defeat in the Evo-Stik Premier play-off.

After the 3-2 defeat by Salford City, the Reds will be looking to at least end the season with some silverware when they take-on Aspatria at Brunton Park (ko 7pm) in the Cumberland Cup final.

But Aspatria won’t be there to make up the numbers and are aiming to end their season on a high as well.

Still in contention to win the County League, they would like to add the cup as well, having lost out to Celtic Nation in the final two years ago.

Reds boss Derek Townsley had wanted a good run in the competition this season and is delighted the team has got through to the final.

“Obviously the league was always our first priority and we gave that our best shot until falling at the last hurdle. We want to win the Cumberland Cup and I know Aspatria will as well.

“We have a number of players unavailable, for one reason or another, and several of our reserve team players will feature,” said Townsley.

Main absentee will be Joe McGee who suffered a knee injury early in Saturday’s play-off final and is going for a scan in Liverpool.

There was also a problem with top scorer Scott Allison, who has been applying ice to a very tender foot and ankle since the Salford game. He is hoping to be fit enough to start.

Gari Rowntree, Phil McLuckie and James Earl have been long-term injury absentees while both Robbie Hebson and Connor Hammell are cup-tied after featuring for Penrith and Carlisle United respectively in earlier rounds.

Aspatria also come into the game on the back of a disappointing result.

They were beaten 2-1 by Workington Athletic in a Cup final on Saturday. They and the Workington side, who still have to meet, are in contention to win the County League title.

Manager David Creighton hopes to be at full-strength for the final, once he has checked on a couple of players who picked up knocks in Saturday’s final.
