Brighton's west Cumbrian striker Glenn Murray believes the Seagulls are still on course for Premier League survival despite his penalty miss against Burnley.

Murray, 34, earned Chris Hughton's men a spot-kick after being fouled by James Tarkowski, but he sent his penalty high over the bar as the match finished in a goalless draw.

Murray said: "I was meant to go left and I just felt my standing foot give way a little bit and I fired it over the top."

Saturday's stalemate means Brighton are 13th on 18 points from as many matches, and three points clear of the relegation zone.

But former Workington Reds, Barrow and Carlisle United man Murray, whose scored five goals this season, says he thinks Brighton are still on course to reach the 40 point mark which could ensure top-flight survival.

"I think a lot of people think it is two points lost but we work on 40 points keeping us in the league," Murray said to The Telegraph.

"We have got 18 points with one more game to go before half way, so we are on track for our total."

Meanwhile, manager Hughton has backed Murray, from Maryport, to bounce back from his penalty miss.

"When somebody misses a penalty or you score an own goal, it is all part and parcel of the game," Hughton said to The Argus.

"There is no point in saying anything because he will be disappointed himself. Glenn is one who is normally very reliable. There isn't anything you can say.

"All you can do as a team is try to stay focused, try to keep the momentum we had at the time and try to score a goal from open play to release that bit of tension."

Brighton are at home to Watford on Saturday, before away games at Chelsea (Boxing Day) and Newcastle (December 30).
