Whitehaven need to be more ruthless in their approach to winning games after a second-half collapse cost them at Swinton.

Coach James Coyle was going through the video recording of Sunday’s match with his assistant Gary Broadbent, and the Haven players at training last night.

Coyle said: “The difference between our first-half performance and the second-half is most marked. We looked a good side for 40 minutes with our skill levels high, our completion rate at 100 per cent and a 26-10 lead at the break.

“But it was different after that. Completion dropped to 70 per cent and we made costly mistakes at crucial times.

“It’s as though we just want to do enough to win the game but aren’t ruthless enough to finish-off the opposition when we are on top.

“We knew Swinton were dangerous with the ball. They have pace and can score from all over the place and we had dealt well with that. It wasn’t as if we were just finding out in the second half what they were capable of.”

Coyle will be looking for a response on Saturday night (6.30pm ko) when Featherstone visit the Recreation Ground in a game which means a lot to both teams.

Rovers can move into the top-four with a victory while Whitehaven can leap out of the relegation zone if they are successful.

“Looking at the table now there isn’t a lot between a number of teams. A couple of wins on the bounce can move you several places, added Coyle.

“But there are still 19 games left to play and there’s no doubt the League table will look a lot different at the end of the season.”

Whitehaven won’t be able to call on Widnes dual-registration forward Sam Brooks who suffered another head injury at Swinton.

Brooks had been stood down by Widnes after being concussed in their Challenge Cup game with Rochdale and his return via Whitehaven was his first game back. He is currently being monitored by Widnes.
