Walking football has been a hit at Annan Athletic - even if it has no standardised rules.

The FA have announced they will be stepping in to draft a rulebook after some disputes have started at competitions nationwide on the rules of the game.

But Annan treasurer Colin Archibald admits he has never encountered any issues when playing.

He said: "There has always been no tackling. We don't have any problems [with the rules]."

And Archibald, an Athletic walking footballer, feels the game should be more about enjoyment than the competitive side, anyway.

"It's for over-50s and it's about getting everybody involved," he said.

"Whether they have played football before or not doesn't matter."

Annan Athletic have played in a walking football tournament this year but Archibald admits it can be difficult to put a team together.

He said: "We get things about tournaments but it kind of depends.

"We've had one [tournament] this year but we might get another one at the back end of this month if we can get enough players.

"We've played Carlisle. We did get an invite to go to Morecambe but logistics meant we couldn't take up that option."

But, with more teams starting in the local area, Annan may be able to arrange more matches.

Archibald added: "There are more and more groups starting to do it.

"There's one in Galloway. There's another group in Lockerbie. Everybody is trying to pull together.

"It's really about enjoying what we're doing."

Archibald also feels walking football has become a great social tool.

"Yes, we want to do well. But it's more about playing, having a good time and enjoying ourselves," he added.

"Once every three months on a Wednesday after a session, we have a social event and a catch-up.

"It's not just meeting for the football."

And Archibald is keen for everybody to get involved in the game at Annan.

He said: "We play with open arms."

Annan hold their sessions on Wednesdays from 1.30-3pm.
