Workington Town head coach Phil Veivers has named an 18-man squad for tomorrow’s pre-season friendly against Barrow Raiders.

New signings Oliver Gordon and Declan Hulme will be making their first appearances for the club since signing on a permanent basis in the off-season.

Strength and conditioning coach Chris Murphy, who played professional rugby league before retiring due to injury, has also been named in the squad.

Town are without half-backs Jarrod Sammut and Jamie Doran at Craven Park with Murphy likely to deputise in their stead.

Nine forwards and seven backs have been named in the side and Veivers says he will be using tomorrow’s game as an opportunity to see how versatile some of his players are.

“I’ve said before, we’ll be using tomorrow’s game as an extension of our pre-season training,” Veivers said.

“It’s a different way of us getting fitness and it will give us something to build on going into the Whitehaven game – and then the Newcastle game – before turning our attentions to Round One.

“It will be interesting for me to see where a few players can play out on the field.

“I want to see who can comfortably play where and see what sort of versatility these players have.

“Missing both Jarrod and Jamie makes it tough for Carl [Forber] but I think we have got a structure together that means we can handle their absences.”

With Dan Rooney and Hulme making their returns from injury, Veivers hopes the duo will take some belief out of tomorrow’s run-out.

“It’s nice for them to get some confidence back after their injuries,” the Aussie continued. “It’s a big thing for them and for myself in seeing what they can do.

“Oliver is in the side too and he’s enjoying himself at Workington.

“He’s moved in with Perry Whiteley and I think that’s really helped him settle in the area.

“He’s training hard and I’m looking forward to seeing him play.”

Town have also announced their squad numbers for the 2016 season.

Half-back Jamie Doran will wear the number seven shirt with star signing Jarrod Sammut opting to to wear the number 28 which he chose during his stint at the club at the end of last season.

Long-serving half-back Carl Forber will now wear the number six shirt.

New signing Declan Hulme will wear number three, with Jason Mossop moving to number four. Aussie props Ryan Verlinden and Oliver Gordon will wear numbers 19 and 21 respectively.
