Youngster Connor Hammell came in from praise from his Workington Reds boss after another promising performance.

The 19-year-old, who joined Reds after being released by Carlisle United last month, is adapting well to the Borough Park environment.

And manager Derek Townsley is pleased with the midfielder’s progression after he played for 68 minutes in Tuesday night’s crucial 4-1 win over Matlock.

“He did tire but this is a big transition for Connor because this is different to the football that he has been used to,” sad Townsley.

“We know this level well enough now to know that it’s 100 mile an hour and he is just a young lad.

“He is a fit lad but the pace of the game can be fast and furious.

“But he made a good contribution to the game.”

Townsley is hoping that Anthony Wright will be back to bolster his side for the final game of the season on Saturday.

Reds welcome Buxton to Borough Park in a make or break clash that will determine their season.

Workington need a victory from their last Evo Stik premier division clash to be in with a shout of reaching the play-offs, dependent on other results also going their way.

“We hope to have Anthony back. He is still having problems with his groin and speaking to him he is still very stiff for two or three days after games which is why he didn’t play on Tuesday,” said Townsley.

“Hopefully he will take it easy during the week and we will have him available for Saturday.”

He added: “Reaching the play-offs is the least the lads deserve given what they have put in to the season.

“We have still got something to play for.

“Let’s hope we can get a result and that other results go in our favour.”
