Workington Town left it to the last minute to snatch a dramatic victory over Dewsbury Rams at The Zebra Claims Stadium.

The visitors were winning 20-16 with two minutes left on the clock when up stepped Matt Gee to power over the tryline to level matters.

Then Jarrod Sammut held his nerve and battled the wind to slot over a conversion from the touchline to seal the much-needed win.

Although it doesn’t move Town off the bottom of the Championship table, it does give them a boost before next weekend’s derby with fellow strugglers Whitehaven.

It was nip and tuck throughout the clash. Town had an early chance when they were awarded a penalty in the centre of the field and Sammut’s kick got them close to the Rams line.

From there, quick hands saw the ball reach winger John Patrick but he was bundled into touch just before the corner flag.

Dewsbury came close as Shane Grady popped an inside ball to Dale Morton but he was halted short of the line.

The first points of the day went to Town as a strong run from Tom Walker drove them downfield.

The ball came out to Sammut and he gave the final ball to Declan Hulme who dived through the Rams defence to touch down, with nine minutes on the clock. Sammut converted.

But Dewsbury struck back as the kick off into the wind swirled and bobbled about. Town were then penalised for offside as they came up with the ball.

Dewsbury took it wide on the last tackle and winger Dale Morton touched down but Paul Sykes’ conversion was caught by the wind and went wide.

Callum Phillips was held up over the line as the young half-back looked to go himself.

Town were forced into two changes when both Tee Ritson and then Declan Hulme received concussion injuries and had to leave the field.

Hulme took a knock as he went to dive on a kick from the Rams attack and knocked on by the try line.

And from the resulting scrum Dewsbury kept the pressure on with Tony Tonks forcing his way over the line, Sykes converting.

Town made another mistake as they looked to go for the intercept on the fifth tackle and Dewsbury get another set of six.

They took full advantage as Lucas Walshow strolled over, with the conversion just missed and the half time score was 14-6 to the visitors.

Eight minutes into the second half Town finally got back into the game as Karl Olstrom broke through the Rams defence and dived over the line. But the wind halted Sammut’s conversion attempt.

Town then had to backtrack and defend quickly as Dewsbury went on the attack but Walshow knocked on over the line to defuse the pressure.

Errors were creeping into the game and both sides missed chances.

Then a great break from Jamie Doran lifted the Town side and he slipped the ball out to winger Ritson who dived over in the corner.

Sammut added a touchline conversion into the wind to put Town in the lead at 16-14.

Six minutes later and Dewsbury snatched the lead back when Andy Kain found a large hole in the home defence and exploited it to touch down.

Town tried to get back into the game but Jack Murphy was bundled into touch as they looked to cross the line.

Then Sammut was unlucky not to get on to the end of his own high bomb as they looked to all their options.

Into the final stages of the game and both Patrick and Tom Walker were held up inches short of the line as they tried to force their way over.

Town were given a scrum 20-metres out with three minutes remaining. And Gee burst on to the ball and charged over the line to the delight of the home faithful.

Sammut’s conversion into the wind sailed between the uprights and Town wound down the clock to take a deserved victory.
