A double is being celebrated by Salutation.

The Carlisle City Sunday League Premier Division outfit have been crowned league and cup winners for this season in the past month.

They edged out St Nicholas Arms to win the league, while they beat the Arroyo Arms after extra-time in the Cumberland Sunday Cup Final.

And Salutation have been on quite a journey over the past few years, with a victory in the cup against Brampton in February, followed by a league success over the Arroyo Arms a week later, a turning point this campaign.

"It has been a good year," Salutation's Ewan Parish said.

"We started in the bottom league and we have come up through the leagues. We lost three of our first five league games at the start but we came through it. We did really well from there.

"I think a big part in doing that is getting the same guys down every week."

Parish thinks that a factor behind the team's success is how close the side are off the pitch.

He said: "I think that another part of the reason we get people down is that we are all mates."

The team is managed by Stuart Storey.

Parish added: "Stu kind of pulls everything together. Amongst four or five others, he does a really good job.

"And he started playing again this season, so he did well to play and manage."

The County Cup Final had been due to be played in Carlisle, although the venue for the final was changed with Gillford Park double-booked, with Salutation claiming a 2-1 win.

"We had a few fans down but it ended up being played out in Whitehaven," Parish said. "Unfortunately, not everyone could trail down there."

But the day ended in positive fashion for the side, who went on to the become Premier Division winners the week after Steven Scott had got the winner in the final.

With next season already in mind, Parish said: "We are definitely playing next season and we are looking to improve for next season."

Salutation have also thanked Martin Hutchinson for helping manage the team, the supporters that travelled to their County Cup Final and sponsors E & N Farrers Haulage .
