Workington Reds lifted the Shaun Hocking Memorial Trophy after a 5-0 victory over Whitehaven Amateurs last night.

Two goals from man of the match Rob Wilson, plus headers from Kyle May and Josh Calvert and a Scott Allison penalty, completed the scoring for Reds.

Workington boss Dave Hewson was delighted with the performance from his side in their first pre-season outing.

He said: “It’s always good to get the first pre-season match out of the way and even better to come up with a win.

“Everyone has had minutes on the pitch and it was nice to see some of the younger lads coming through.”

Former Carlisle United star David Symington turned out for the Reds but his work means he is currently struggling to commit.

Hewson added: “David is joining up with us in training when he can and we are hoping to get something sorted for the start of the season.”

Defender Kyle May who retired at the end of last season also started the game and Hewson said he was keeping training with them to bring the younger members of the squad on.

Reds did not have it all their own way and they were only 1-0 ahead at the break as Whitehaven Amateurs defended well and had their own chances early on when Craig Robson popped up a nice ball for Rob Green but he put the effort over the bar.

Reds then peppered Amateurs as ConorTinnion shot his free kick over the bar and then Scott Allison’s shot was blocked.

Trialist Ellis Pearson made a good showing on his debut with some strong runs and he also had a shot straight to the keeper.

Reds went ahead with a Kyle May header in the 31st minute when he met a Tinnion corner but it stayed that way until half time.

It was in the 64th minute that Reds upped a gear when Allison was halted in his tracks by Whitehaven keeper Tom Fowler in the area and he duly stepped up to dispatch the penalty.

Then Rob Wilson had a simple tap in from a Robbie Hebson cross to make it 3-0.

In the last 10 minutes Reds scored two more. Youngster Callum Henderson flicked on a corner and it fell to Calvert who headed it home.

Then Wilson got his second of the match when he latched on to a loose ball following a mix-up in the Whitehaven defence.

Reds will be happy with their first outing of the season and will now turn their attentions to the visit of Carlisle United on Saturday at Borough Park.
