Peterhead will be Annan Athletic's opponents in the second round of the Irn-Bru Cup.

The Black and Golds, managed by Carlisle United's record outfield appearance-maker Peter Murphy, caused one of the upsets of the first round last Tuesday.

They beat Celtic's Under-20s 3-1 with former Queen of the South man Aidan Smith getting a hat-trick after Wallace Duffy had been sent off for the young Celtic team in the early stages of the match.

Murphy said: "Peterhead have started strongly. We played them in the first league game of the season and led after 85 minutes.

"They then equalised and scored a brilliant goal to win the game. But our players will be confident enough going to play Peterhead.

"But, for now, we have to concentrate on the game that comes next. We have to be prepared for it."

That win over Celtic's "Colts" was the Galabankies first competitive victory of the 2017/18 season - their only previous success this term in a competitive fixture had come in the Betfred Cup when they beat Dumbarton on penalties after a goalless draw.

Murphy's men then backed up their Irn-Bru Cup win on Saturday, with their player-manager on the score-sheet in a league fixture at Shielfield Park against Berwick Rangers.

The Borderers broke the deadlock, but goals from Steven Swinglehurst, Ryan Sinnamon, Murphy, Smith and new signing Blair Henderson saw Athletic claim a 5-1 win.

That result also cost Berwick boss John Coughlin his job. The Borderers announced the decision to part company with the former Stenhousemuir and East Stirlingshire manager yesterday.

A statement from Berwick read: "In view of recent results, the board has today met with John Coughlin to discuss his future with the club.

"Following this meeting, it has been decided to terminate John’s contract by mutual consent.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank John and wish him well for the future.

"The board will work with existing coaching staff to prepare for our next game on Saturday and we ask our fans for their continued support during this time."

Annan will again be in league action on Saturday, looking to claim a third straight win, when they entertain Montrose.
