Workington Reds have brought in former Penrith striker Nathan Waterson on trial.

Waterson impressed Reds bosses when the two sides clashed in the Cumberland Cup last season and they believe he can do a job for them in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

But the young attacker did pick up an injury at the back end of last season and he will have to be assessed before he begins training.

Joint-manager Dave Hewson said: “We played against Penrith in the Cumberland Cup last season and he was their centre forward and he worked really hard.

“He just has the attributes we are looking for in a striker, that bit of physicality and he is young and very eager to learn.

“He wants to do the work and this is a good opportunity for him to come in and show what he can do.”

Hewson added that there was no time limit on his trial as they gear up for the start of the 2016-17 season in August.

He said: “Nathan is going to join us at training but he suffered an injury towards the back end of last season.

“So we need to wait and make sure that he is 100 per cent fit before he starts pre-season training.

“It is just a case of him coming along to see what we are about and for us to look more closely at him.

“We want to see how he fits in with the lads and copes with training, and also to see him play in games.”

But he will not be joined at Borough Park by his Penrith colleague Grant Davidson, who has turned down a chance to join Reds.

The Penrith skipper had been in talks with Reds bosses about a move but decided to remain at Frenchfield Park.

Reds manager, Derek Townsley, was disappointed that Davidson had changed his mind about joining his squad. He said: “I think sometimes players get in a comfort zone and they are frightened to come out of that.

“We have made an approach for Grant twice now but he has decided to remain at Penrith which is a shame as I think he could have been an asset to us.”

Reds will begin their pre-season schedule with a clash at Whitehaven Amateurs next Tuesday night for the Shaun Hocking Memorial Trophy (ko 7.30pm).
