New Annan Athletic signing Gavin Skelton has admitted he is looking forward to playing football again.

Skelton joined the Galabankies a fortnight ago after being invited to train with the club.

But the former Queen of the South manager's debut for the Scottish League Two outfit has been delayed as he awaits international clearance after turning out for his local club Appleby AFC.

The Cumbrian explains how his move to Galabank came about.

He said: "The manager [Jim Chapman] rang me. I was not sure after leaving Queens.

"But he was keen to sign me which was good to feel wanted."

When asked if he thought he would be available for this afternoon's game against Clyde, Skelton said: "I think I'm alright.

"The good thing is I've not played any competitive football for 18 or 19 months, so it's given me the chance to get back fit."

Annan's young squad has largely been inconsistent this campaign, failing to pick up back-to-back Scottish League Two wins all season.

And Skelton admitted it would be "great" if he could add some experience to Chapman's young side.

He joked: "I don't think he has signed me for my legs! There is already plenty of legs in the team.

"If I can add experience, that's great. From a personal point of view, I'm looking forward to playing."

Annan travel to Broadwood Stadium today, knowing a win by two goals or more would see them overtake their opponents and move into the final play-off place.

Skelton said: "That's football, it changes very quickly. These are all big games because you play each other four times in a season, so the points difference can change quickly."

And, after nearly two months away from the game, the ex-Carlisle United, Workington Reds and Barrow man is keen to fill the void that had been left on his Saturday afternoon.

"I enjoy football, I like playing," he said. "I've missed it on a Saturday.

"It's a weird thing to explain. I'm just looking forward to playing again."

On his new team-mates, Skelton added: "They have been great.

"I think, when you are younger, you are a bit nervous coming into a new club. But I'm used to it now."
