Delighted Workington Town coach Phil Veivers paid tribute to the second half defensive effort that led to victory against Dewsbury Rams.

Town picked up their third win of the season, snatching a 22-20 victory from the jaws of defeat in the final minutes of the game at the Zebra Claims Stadium.

A try from Matt Gee levelled matters in the 78th minute and then a touchline conversion, into the wind, from Jarrod Sammut, sealed the win.

Workington are still rock bottom of the Championship on seven points but they have gained some confidence ahead of next weekend's derby clash with whitehaven.

Veivers said: "Defensively in the second half we were outstanding.

"They showed a lot of spirit to hang in there in the game.

"We got into the lead twice in the second half and obviously the best time to go into the lead is with 40 seconds to go.

"It was a crucial kick from Sammut and I think he owed me one for kicking it away on the third tackle in that second half."

Veivers admitted he was frustrated at half time to go in 14-6 down after Town created a number of chances.

But they came out determined in the second half and crucially they got the two valuable points.

"I was a little bit frustrated going in at half time down again cos I thought we pretty much dominated field position and probably had more ball than the opposition did," said Veivers.

"But they completed better than us in the first half and they got their due rewards with a couple of soft tries.

"We aimed up in the second half, got a bit physical with them. We played in their faces and forced some errors and we came up with some very nice tries."

Now attention will turn to next Sunday's derby at Workington.

Veivers added: "The lads really hung in there for each other and they worked hard for their team-mates and that's really big especially at this stage of the season.

"We'll look at the positives out of this game, address our shortfalls and then get ready for Whitehaven.

"We've won a game but we still have a shedload of work to do before the end of the season to get on the shirt tails of the others and we start at Whitehaven next week."
