SOMETHING had to give at the Athletic Ground when Maryport and Barrow Island put their 100 per cent records on the line.

In the end it was revitalised Maryport who retained their winning start to the Cumbria Men’s League season by beating their south Cumbrian visitors 20-10.

As expected it was very tight with Maryport only certain of the win when Lee Ferguson scored a try in the last minute, which Mark Walker converted.

It was Walker who had scored the first points of the game in the 19th minute when he landed a penalty but a Lewis Nixon try on 27 minutes, converted by Walker gave the home lead a better look.

Barrow Island got themselves into the contest to turn round 8-4 in arrears when Ryan Clegg scored an unconverted try five minutes before the break.

When John Dollochine forced his way over on the hour and Walker added his third successful kick Maryport looked to be assuming control, But a tense finish was assured when Ian Irving scored for the Islanders five minutes from time and Jake Carter converted.

With just four points between the two sides Maryport needed that last-minute Ferguson try to see them home.

Liam Armstrong took the award as Maryport’s man of the match with Luke Cresswell the outstanding player for the visitors.

The other cross-county clash in west Cumbria produced another home win as Seaton successfully saw off Roose Pioneers 20-0.

Seaton had taken the lead on 20 minutes with an unconverted try from Jack Earl and soon afterwards Tom Curwen went in for the second touchdown, this time converted by Jordan Ostle, who was to emerge as their man of the match.

It was Ostle who rounded-off a successful half for the hosts by scoring his side’s third try on 34 minutes.

Remarkably there was no further scoring until the 78th minute when Lewis Mason scored the fourth and final Seaton try, converted by Duncan Moyles.

Ellenborough were denied their first point at this higher level by a drop goal three minutes from time at Ulverston as they went under 19-18.

They had fought back all square after going in at half-time, trailing their south Cumbrian hosts 8-6.

Kevin Hoban had given them an 8th minute lead with Lee Birks adding the extras before Ulverston scored three tries in a 10-minute spell late in the half. Tom Spedding crossed twice and Jake Spedding also got over with Conner Saunders converting all three.

But Craig Barker’s men came back gamely with tries from Ryan Wilson and Dave Miller, both converted by Birks.

It looked as though Elbra would go home with an honourable draw until Marc Story’s 77th minute drop goal winner.

Once again the bad weather intervened and two games had to be postponed and will be re-arranged at a later date – Hensingham v Distington and Glasson v Wath Brow.

It was even worse in the Iggesund Cumberland ARL where the heavy overnight rain played havoc with the pitches and only one of four scheduled games went ahead,

Although much too early to call it a title decider that’s what a number of pundits had said about the clash between Flimby and Aspatria.

Aspatria had scored the first points of the game with a try from Guy Reed on 16 minutes but it was Flimby who emerged 26-10 winners.

The Hornets lead lasted exactly seven minutes before Flimby seized the initiative with a try from Darren Pape which Callum Moffat converted.

They actually extended that to 10-4 at the break with an unconverted try on 29 minutes from Andrew Prest.

Flimby made a flying start to the second-half with a try from Lee Howard a minute into the action and on 54 minutes went further ahead with another unconverted try, this one from Adam Birkett.

On the hour Aspatria tried to rally and Luke Johnson went in for a try and added the conversion.

Moffatt kicked a penalty for Flimby on 67 minutes and a Ryan Williams try nine minutes from the end, converted by Moffat saw them home with room to spare.
