ALL five west Cumbrian rugby league teams have avoided each other in the draw for the second round of the Challenge Cup.

National Conference Premier Division sides Egremont Rangers, Kells and Wath Brow Hornets have been drawn at home while reigning Cumbria Men’s League champions Distington have again been drawn away.

Kells have been handed a tricky tie after being drawn against Underbank Rangers.

Underbank knocked out reigning Premier Division Champions Leigh Miners Rangers in the first round.

Wath Brow will welcome Division One side Oulton Raiders and Egremont will take on Rochdale Mayfield at Gilfoot Park.

Distington are on the road again as they travel to York Acorn.

Commenting on the draw, Kells head coach Peter Smith said: “Leigh Miners were a big scalp for Underbank so it’ll be a tricky game.

“I hope conditions will be a bit better than they were at the weekend.

“We beat them in the season we earned our first promotion and it was a case of us or them, so there’s a bit of history there.”

Distington head coach Carl Hewer said: “The lads were outstanding at the weekend against Normanton, I think they wanted it more and they looked really fit out there.

“York Acorn will be a massive challenge, but there’s no pressure on us so I’ll want the lads to give a good account of themselves and enjoy the occasion.”

Reacting to his side’s draw against Oulton Raiders, Wath Brow Hornets head coach Ian Rooney said: “I know plenty of people from there and they’ve got a good coach in Jamie Benn.

“They have some quality players in their side and it looks as though they’ve recruited for this year too.

“We’re going through our conditioning at the moment, as I imagine all the teams are, so we’re using the Challenge Cup as a meaningful opportunity to prepare for the league starting in March.

“I’d also like to wish the other four Cumbrian clubs good luck for their games.”

Egremont Rangers assistant coach Paul Henson said: “Rochdale is a tricky tie for us. We played them twice last year, won at home but lost away.

“They are a very good side and we’re looking forward to it.

“Training is going really well, there’s some good numbers there.

“Everybody wants to play and it’s time for the lads to stand up and be counted.”

South Cumbrian side Millom are at home to Pilkington Recs.

The ties will be played on the weekend of February 13 and 14.
