In a hard-fought home tie, the west Cumbrians beat Queens 18-12 to set-up another home game in the last eight against Thornhill Trojans. They had got through 22-14 at home to West Bowling.
It was a tight game at Gillfoot with the hosts scoring three tries to the visitors’ two and never pulling far enough clear to be comfortable.
They led 12-6 at the break with tries from Matt Bewsher and Lewis Beckwith, both converted by Bewsher.
It took a third try from Pat Wells, and a Bewsher penalty, to give them just enough breathing space to win.
Wath Brow sent a young team to play Mirfield Stags in their National Cup-tie and were unlucky to lose 9-6.
Stags are a top Yorkshire side, coached by Super League referee Richard Silverwood alongside former top player Robbie Hunter Paul and they certainly knew they had been in a game.
In a tight first-half, scrum-half Tom Hannah got over for the Hornets’ try which was converted by Jason Connery and they only trailed 8-6 at the break.
It was even tighter in the second-half when the Stags could only stretch their lead by a single point from a field goal.
The young Hornets were close to snatching victory but just couldn’t get the ball down.
Hornets spokesman Martin Brough said: “As the only A team in the competition I think the lads can be very proud of themselves with the way they performed.”
The quarter final draw is: Thatto Heath v Oldham St Annes or Myton; Frston v Mirfield Stags; Egremont v Thornhill Trojans; Upton v East Hull.
