WORKINGTON Town assistant coach Jonty Gorley says his side must target maximum points in their bottom-of-table against Swinton on Sunday as they look to kickstart their season.

Workington pushed high-flying Leigh all the way on Easter Monday, but three tries in the last ten minutes saw the hosts go down 40-24.

Sunday’s clash sees the league’s two bottom teams battling it out with Swinton only below Town on points difference.

Coach Phil Veivers was only able to name 14 fit players on Monday but should have more options available at the weekend.

A win for injury-stricken Town could propel them above Oldham who they beat earlier in the season.

Gorley said: “You have to look at it as a must-win game when you’re playing teams around there. Monday was frustrating because at the start we said ‘see what you can do’ and we had the chance to beat a top team with 14 men.

“On Monday we took more chances against a better side and it gives us a confidence boost but the lads are a bit battered and bruised.

“No one gave us a chance but we went out, did our best and showed they’re good enough to do a job against anyone.”

Town’s coaching staff are still sweating on the fitness of hooker Callum Phillips and props Tom Walker and Graham Mattinson.

But Declan Hume could make a comeback from injury.

Swinton come into the match on the back of a win against fellow strugglers Oldham.

Meanwhile Town were beaten in a tasty local derby against Whitehaven on Good Friday.

Gorley added: “It’s nice to have a full complement of substitutes, but you only need 13 on the pitch.

“It would be nice to get some momentum going. We put in a decent performance against Whitehaven and we can create chances, we just have to take them.”

Sunday’s game at Heywood Road gets underway at 3pm.
