Former Carlisle United loan goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and ex-Workington Reds loanee Jonathan Mitchell have both made the England Under-21s squad.

The pair have been selected as two of the three goalkeepers in head coach Aidy Boothroyd's squad for the tournament with England's campaign kicking off next Friday, the other keeper being Angus Gunn.

Sweden will be the young Three Lions' opponents for their tournament opener, before matches against Slovakia and hosts Poland.

But injuries mean Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek misses out, as do club team-mate Izzy Brown and Manchester City's Patrick Roberts with the initial squad of 28 trimmed to 23.

Pickford enjoyed a very successful season with Sunderland, despite the Black Cats' relegation, as he cemented a first-team spot after a number of loan spells away from the Stadium of Light, including one at Carlisle.

Mitchell, 22, had two loan spells with Workington Reds.

Head coach Boothroyd said: "We have got a couple of guys who already know what the Euros are going to be like and see themselves as having a little bit of unfinished business there.

"I think that in itself is a really good motivation for them and that can spread through to the rest of the squad who are going for the first time.

"It will be a brilliant experience for them and a big part of their tool-kit going forward as players, but just that integration in getting them ready is going to be a big thing for us.

"Every tournament brings its different challenges for all of the teams there, with players having injuries at the end of their seasons and coaches looking to energise the players to go one more time."

Also included in the England Under-21 squad are Arsenal defender Calum Chambers, midfield men Jack Grealish and James Ward-Prowse, and Norwich's Nathan Redmond and Jacob Murphy.
