There will be Cumbrian representation in the England squad who kick-off their Under-20 World Cup campaign this morning.

The youth team, led by former Carlisle United boss Paul Simpson as their head coach, arrived at their first base for the competition in Jeonju, South Korea, on Tuesday.

Simpson’s side will get their tournament under way with a tough game against Argentina (8.30am kick-off) and the former Blues boss can’t wait to get started.

He said: “We’re delighted to be a part of it. We know it’s going to be a real challenge coming over here, we’re up against some fantastic teams in Argentina, Guinea and South Korea.

“But we’re really positive, we have had a fantastic week over in Japan, staying on Awaji Island and our preparations are going well.”

Following England’s opening match against Argentina, they will play Guinea on Tuesday morning and host nation South Korea next Friday.

One of the three England goalkeepers selected for the tournament is Whitehaven’s Dean Henderson.

Henderson’s career began at Carlisle United, before he signed for Manchester United, while he also spent time out on loan at Grimsby during the 2016/17 season.

Newcastle stopper Freddie Woodman and Reading’s Luke Southwood are the other two keepers in the squad.

Head coach Simpson, meanwhile, is also pleased with the squad and the way they have been preparing during their trip.

“I’m delighted with the squad we have been able to assemble out here and I’m really looking forward to seeing the players perform on a wonderful stage,” said the Cumbrian, who led the Blues to double promotions in 2005 and 2006.

“Hopefully, we can entertain the South Korean public and get some positive results.

“We will give the same amount of preparation for South Korea as we will do for Argentina and Guinea. We have watched a number of their games and we had the great experience of coming over last year to play against them, so we will be prepared.

“But first we need to take the Argentina game very seriously.”

Newcastle striker Adam Armstrong, Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook and Liverpool midfielder Sheyi Ojo are among the other players in the England squad.

But Patrick Roberts has chosen not to represent England and will instead stay with Celtic until the end of their season.
