EGREMONT rugby league team are now officially in the Guinness Book of Records – albeit on the receiving end.

In a Conference Premier Division game at Wigan St Patrick’s Clarington Park last year the Cumbrians conceded a try after just 7.3 seconds – which has now been ratified as the fastest try scored in rugby league.

Scorer Dean Hatton is in the Guinness Book of Records but it took a lot of work to get him there.

Terry Gorman, who videos matches for the Wigan amateur club, suggested there was a chance of it being the fastest ever try as he recalled the record stood at 7.75 seconds.

When he timed the score against Egremont he clocked it at 7.3 seconds.

Stand-off Hatton said: “Terry suggested we submit it to the Guinness Book of Records but we were amazed at what we were asked for.

"We needed to submit an unedited tape of the game; a statement from me; a letter of confirmation from the club that it was a bone fide game; one from the referee and one from the Rugby Football League.

"Then we had to have a letter stating what the qualifications of the referee were.”

Appearing in the Guinness Book of Records is the last thing on Egremont’s mind at the moment.

They are bottom of the Premier Division and without a coach after Gary Charlton resigned last week – and play Wigan St Patrick’s on Saturday.
