Cumbria Men’s League champions Distington reached the semi-final of the E Lamb Amateur Cup.

They had to come from behind in the second-half to win 28-10 at Maryport and earn a semi-final trip to Flimby on Wednesday.

It was fiercely contested throughout, but particularly in the first half when we had that amateur rugby league rarity – a scoreless 40 minutes.

So everything hinged on the second period and it was Maryport who struck the first blow with a try from Mark Walker, which was soon cancelled-out by an unconverted try for Distington from Steven Conway.

Maryport’s hopes rose when they went into a 10-4 lead with a try by Ben Robinson which Walker converted but the rest of the scoring only concerned Distington.

The village side drew level with a try by Aiden Worthington which was converted by Gavin Martin and from there they pushed on to victory.

Steven Clarke, Phil Lister and Jamie Friel scored further tries as Distington cut loose an Martin added all three extras.

Cumberland ARL leaders Flimby will give Distington a test next week while in the other semi-final Kells A will host Hensingham in a tasty Copeland derby in the other.

Attention switches to the second round of the BARLA Cumbria County Cup tomorrow with a mixed bag of quarter final ties.

Stand-out tie is probably Distington’s home clash with Ellenborough as the Men’s league champions take-on the Cumberland ARL champions.

Glasson have an interesting home clash with a team from the south of the county, Dalton, who play their rugby in Division One of the Pennine League. They are third bottom in a competition which has been running for some time, with 18 League matches completed.

Seaton travel to the south of the county where they have a potentially tough test against the 2014 Cumbria Men’s League champions Walney Central.

Seaton are the holders of the trophy after beating Walney in the final at the Zebra Claims Stadium so will be fired-up to hold onto the silverware.

The other quarter-final tie is an all-south Cumbria tie involving Barrow Island and Ulverston.

The BARLA County Shield dominates the Iggesund Cumberland ARL scene tomorrow.

No doubt about the top game, the clash between Aspatria and Flimby the two leading sides in the competition.

Flimby, who have recently added Ellenborough to their impressive list of Cumbria Men’s League scalps, already have a win over the Hornets on their CV this season.

Four wins in the League for 100% record means they share top spot in the table with Kells A and Aspatria, but both their rivals have lost matches.

Aspatria reached the semi-final stage last week with a 28-12 win at Great Clifton while Flimby were awarded a walk-over when Broughton Red Rose cried-off late-on.

Kells beat Egremont 36-18 in a clash of the second teams to set-up their semi-final trip to Seaton A.

The Allerdale side probably recorded the best win of the quarter finals as they travelled to Lowca and came home with a 30-18 victory.

There’s one re-arranged Cumberland ARL game in which Broughton Red Rose and Great Clifton can both reasonably anticipate a first win of the season as they meet at Papcastle Road.
