Kells A and Distington will contest the final of the E. Lamb Amateur Cup at the Copeland Stadium on Friday, May 20.

They were both comfortable winners of one-sided semi-finals in mid-week when they scored 114 points between them.

In a Copeland derby Kells A beat Hensingham 52-0 while Distington beat Flimby 62-4.

Kells had opened the scoring after only four minutes with a try from Jordan Herve which Jake Parker converted. Tries continued at regular intervals so that Kells led 26-0 at half-time.

Cameron Seeds (9), Darren Seeds (16), Kieran Halcrow (25) and Parker (38) all got over the Hensingham line. Parker, who was Kells’ man of the match, converted three of them.

It was a perfectly symmetrical performance from the hosts as they also scored 26 points in the second-half.

The tries in the second period came from Darren Seeds (45), Dominic Dublin (49), Parker (52, 73) and Bailey Morton (71). Parker added three conversions.

Wayne Laverick won the nomination as Hensingham’s man of the match.

In front of a large crowd current Men’s League leaders Distington cruised through to the final after comprehensively beating a young Flimby side 62-4.

Centre Gavin Martin led the try-scoring for the visitors with four touchdowns, the pick of them coming in the 25th minute when Flimby were on the attack. A short kick through was gathered by Martin who raced from his own 25 to touch down unopposed next to the posts.

It had taken Distington just two minutes to get off the mark when winger Phil Lister raced down the right wing to score the first of his brace. Also helping himself to a couple of tries was full back Stephen Conway.

Also on the score sheet for the visitors was Aiden Worthington, Shaun Adams and Clayton Sutton who also kicked nine conversions for a personal tally of 22 points.

Flimby had a chance on 14 minutes, when camped in the Distington 25, but centre Oscar Harris was just short on the last tackle.

On 71 minutes Flimby scored their only try of the game, when, following a chip over from Grant Bethwaite, the Distington defence knocked the ball on and winger Grant underwood took advantage to touch down.

Throughout the game Distington played some fast and exciting rugby throwing the ball from side to side, with most of their tries being scored out wide. However the Flimby yoiungsters earned high praise for battling on right to the final whistle.

There’s a full programme of matches scheduled for tomorrow in both the Cumbia Men’s League and the Iggesund Cumberland ARL.

Three of the five games in the men’s League will be played in the west of the county but probably match of the day is in the south where Walney Central entertain Barrow Island.

Champions Distington entertain Maryport, who seem to be blowing hot and cold this year while Ellenborough will be looking to make progress up the table at the expense of Roose who ravel north.

Wath Brow Hornets and Hensingham provide an interesting pairing at Red Beck while Glasson Rangers are on the road south to take-on Ulverston.

Cumberland ARL leaders Flimby have won all four games so far and they have an interesting match in prospect tomorrow when they host Lowca, who have won all three of theirs.

Two other sides in the top four meet-up with Kells A hosting Aspatria Hornets. Both have eight points but the Hornets have played a game more.

Broughton Red Rose, buoyant after their first League win of the season – 40-12 against Great Clifton – would love to follow-up with another win when they host Egremont Rangers A.

In the other game Seaton A entertain the Lions of Great Clifton who are still looking to earn their first points of the season.

Wath Brow coach Ian Rooney, who has seen his side move into the Conference Premier Division’s top four, has had the English Lions on his mind this week.

Head coach Rooney will be leading a touring team to Fiji, probably in November, and has been making preparations.

He wants to establish a train-on squad, starting next month, and he wants every Open Age club to put forward nominations. It’s not just from their own clubs, but players from others who have caught their eye in opposition.

Rooney’s e-mail sent out to the clubs said: “The train-on squad will meet in early/mid June which means players have had time to show their form so far.

“The squad can, and will remain fluid, with players always able to be selected or deselected. Players from all teams/Leagues are eligible.”

In the Premier Division tomorrow Wath Brow are on the road to Castleford to take-on Lock lane – who must be heartily sick of Cumbrian opposition. This is their third successive game against west Cumbria’s finest, with the first two both away fixtures.

They lost to a last minute penalty against Egremont and last week were beaten at Kells by a point.

Kells, meanwhile, travel to York Acorn aware that the League’s bottom side made a good fist of it last week before they went down 26-24 at Wath Brow – their best performance so far.

A drop goal by Ross Gainford was, to all intent and purposes, the winning score for Kells in that clash with Lock Lane.

Egremont Rangers dropped back into the bottom three after their 24-6 defeat at West Hull so they will be hoping to pick up the winning thread again when they host Rochdale Mayfield.

Both are on four points, although Egremont (8) have played more games than any other team in the League. Mayfield have only been in action five times.
