Cumberland Cup glory is being targeted by Carlisle City manager James Tose.

City will host Netherhall at Gillford Park next month as they aim to reach the semi-final stage of the competition.

The Cumberland Cup represents Carlisle City's final realistic chance of picking up silverware this season, with Tose's men having little else to play for in the league this term other than pride.

They sit in 13th in the league table, 15 points outside the play-off places but well clear of the relegation zone, too.

Tose said: "We are in the Quarter-Final of the Cumberland Cup. Hopefully, we can beat Netherall in that."

But the City manager admitted "the pressure is off" his side this term and that will allow him to turn one eye towards preparing for next season.

"It's a case of now saying 'let's try to win some games and maybe look at players for next season' and get an identity going forward," he said.

"No matter what happens, we will probably look back and say it's been a good season. We have a good set of lads and they all want to win football matches."

Reserve players Matthew Brown and Bradley Hayton have stepped-up into the first-team since the turn of the year.

Hayton was one of the Sky Blues' scorers last time out in a 3-1 victory at Bacup Borough, which saw them respond after losing their first two matches of 2017.

"We've had another two players step-up from the reserves," Tose added. "Brad Hayton has done a good job and Matty Brown has played, as well.

"For the younger players, it's just a case of getting more experience. As soon as they start believing they are good enough for this level, they will be fine."

Carlisle City are due to play Netherhall in their quarter-final tie on February 21.

In the other Cumberland Cup Quarter-Finals, holders Workington Reds will play Cleator Moor Celtic, who knocked out Carlisle United.

Silloth will lock horns with Penrith and Pirelli will play Whitehaven AFC.

Penrith manager Jim Nichols is also keen to try to win the Cumberland Cup this season.

He said: "We are still in the Cumberland Cup and want to try to win that."
